Building an AI-Powered Enterprise Decarbonization Solution with IBM watsonx

Indonesia is one of a growing number of countries that requires public companies to make a sustainability report every year (regulation SEOJK No 16/SEOJK. 04/2021). A recently released white paper found that 94% of Indonesian organizations plan to boost investments in sustainability initiatives, with 89% already allocating more funding for green technologies in their 2025 budgets.
The national decarbonization process presents a significant growth opportunity, and TruCarbon (PT Solusi Transisi Iklim), an enterprise climate transition enabler and IBM business partner, is working with IBM to develop a carbon development solution. Called TruMRV (monitoring, reporting and verification), the system is built with IBM watsonx, IBM’s flagship portfolio of AI products, to advance environmental, social, and governance (ESG) monitoring & reporting in Indonesia.
With IBM watsonx, TruCarbon’s TruMRV will use artificial intelligence to automate and accelerate previously costly manual processes for businesses to track and reduce their carbon emissions. The system will also be able to identify and calculate the carbon sequestering potential of a forestry concession project as well as ensure real-time verification using geospatial intelligence systems.
“With a commitment to driving real, measurable climate impact, the collaboration will support businesses in navigating their climate journey to create a more sustainable future together. “We are combing our deep expertise in climate science, policy, and carbon markets with IBM's ethical and governance AI protocols”, says TruCarbon CEO Debby Reynata.
Many industries today see sustainability as a strategic business imperative, where ESG factors in the enterprise value of a company. “IBM technology can play a critical role in the enterprise sustainability journey, where we turn green ambitions into action. We are very happy to collaborate with TruCarbon to drive real, measurable climate impact,” notes Roy Kosasih, President Director of IBM Indonesia.
With IBM watsonx, TruMRV can prevent fraudulent reporting and ensure high quality carbon credits, offering transparency for high quality projects at a much lower cost. TruCarbon plans to pilot the solution at their Kapuas Sibau REDD+ project in West Kalimantan next year with a land concession of about 45,000 hectares or the equivalent to over 111,000 professional soccer fields. It is hoped that in its lifetime, the project can reduce 18 to 19 million tons of carbon emissions, achieving 10 of the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals.
